
Julie London (nee Peck) was an American actress and a singer who performed for over 40 years. London was a torch singer and was well-known for her soft, smooth voice. She recorded over 30 albums of jazz and pop standards between 1955 and 1969. The first time she was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame was her recording of "Cry Me a River" the song that she first performed on her debut album. London was nominated in 1974 for the Golden Globe Award as a actor for her performance in Emergency! of Dixie McCall. London was born in Santa Rosa to vaudevillian parents. Her first professional job was as an actress when she was employed as an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles. London's 35-year-long acting career began around 1944, when she appeared in movies. The films featured roles for the lead female role in several westerns. She also appeared with Rock Hudson in The Fat Man (1951), John Cassavetes and Robert Taylor in Saddle the Wind (1958), Gary Cooper in Man of the West (1958) and Robert Mitchum with The Wonderful Country (1959). In the mid-1950s she signed a recording contract with Liberty Records, marking the beginning of her professional music career. The final album of her studio was released in 1969. Her success continued as the female lead in the role of Dixie McCall on the television series Emergency! (1972-1979) in which she co-starred with Bobby Troup. Jack Webb, her ex-husband also produced the show.
